Vincent Van Gogh left Paris for Arles Provence in early 1888. Left us a lot of paintings about his Arles life story. But the Courtyard of the Hospital is a sad one.

Van Gogh only lived in Arles for 15 months (Feb 1888 - May 1889), But his Arles experience was so important to his art career.
Arrived at the Arles on 21 February, 1888, Van Gogh found some new sense about this colorful place, A lot of local landscapes were painted during this time.
Several months later. Van Gogh signed a lease to rent the four rooms in the right hand side of the “Yellow House” at No. 2 Place Lamartine, And wanted to use it as a studio.
On October, His best friend, Gauguin eventually arrived in Arles. They two genius painted together. That’s the very short nice days.
But the two artists’ relationship was deteriorating badly after two month. They quarrelled violent about art. In 23 December 1888, van Gogh wildly threatened Gauguin with a razor; the same night, in deep remorse, van Gogh cut off part of his own ear. Gauguin left Arles and did not see Van Gogh again.
Van Gogh was send to this hospital. He stayed here in a critical state for a few days, left this famous painting.
Now, The hospital is named Espace Van Gogh ,It’s a cultural center including a library and art gallery that are dedicated to the artist. And it is a part of world heritage too.
The interior courtyard is maintained to look as it did as Van Gogh’s sight.
Espace Van Gogh only open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, so, I was lucky.
