How To Make Tangyuan For Chinese Lantern Festival
Chinese Lantern Festival is coming on 9 Feb,2009. It’s the first full moon day of the Chinese lunar year. It’s also considered as the end of the Chinese New year. According to Chinese traditon, We will eat Tangyuan (汤圆 in Chinese, Also called Yuanxiao in English) together with family members on Lantern Festival and Winter Solstice Festival.
Do you love Tangyuan too? And Do you know how to make them?

Tangyuan is made from glutinous rice flour. You can prepare glutinous rice flour in a bowl and slowly add hot water until they mix into dough. Then you can pinch off the dough and roll them into small balls.

Then you can fill tangyuan with either sweet or savoury fillings. Sweet fillings are often made from peanut butter, black sesame seeds or red beans. But I always prefer the savoury fillings made from meat, mushroom and green vegetables.

Then try to enwrap all the fillings into glutinous rice dough.

You can make different forms for different fillings.

Ready? Then you can drop these balls into boiling water and cook them for about 8 minutes until they float. Okay, Just enjoy them!

Yeah, Most Tangyuan are sweet, But in my hometown at Southern Yangtze River, we love savoury ones. So we often make them ourselves. because we seldom can buy savoury ones in supermarket!

I love savoury ones partly influence by my father, Partly because I can’t eat too much sweet things.
But I love all things made from glutinous rice flour!

Hi iwalk, In south India where I belong to we make a similar dish like this on special ocassions but the difference is we used to fill the rice dumblings with a mixture of scraped coconut and jaggery cooked in low flame and then steam the rice dumblings for 10 minutes in a pressure pan. I love that it tastes really very good
