In The Name Of Three Kingdoms

iWalk 15 January 2009 27 Comments

John Woo’s new movie “Red Cliff “(赤壁 in Chinese ) is very hot these days. That’s a story about an important campaign in Three Kingdoms (三国) period.
I don’t know how do you think about Woo’s Three Kingdoms story, But I know many Chinese people are unsatisfied with this movie, Because they know the story of Three Kingdoms better than John Woo.

The most famous Three brothers(Liu Bei 刘备, Guan Yu 关羽and Zhang Fei 张飞, From left to right), You can see the story of “the pledge of the three in the peach garden” from the famous novel “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”(三国演义).

ZhangFei & Guanyu. Guanyu (The red face one) is worshiped by Chinese people widely, especially in Hong Kong. He is the epitome of loyalty and righteousness, He is also the God of fortune because of this character.

You can see this kind of Wooden ox at JinLi street. It was created by Zhu Ge Liang while he served Shu Han Kingdom. Its main purpose was to carry heavy supplies to the army easily through the rough road.

This restaurant named “The place of Three Visits”, It’s a name from the story of Liu Bei visited Zhu Ge Liang three times to show his sincerity, Finally Zhu Ge Liang joined Liu Bei’s group and help him set up the Shu Han kingdom. This restaurant also services Three Kingdoms Dinner.

I visited a street named JinLi (锦里) yesterday. That’s a street just beside The Wuhou Shrine (武侯祠) in ChengDu. The Wuhou Shrine is the place to sacrifices Zhu Ge Liang (诸葛亮), one of the greatest Chinese strategists, statesman, engineer, scholar, and inventor of three kingdoms period. I found something interesting about that period at JinLi street.

Sichuan has many highlights of Three Kingdoms period. Because Sichuan was the base of “Shu Han” (蜀汉 in Chinese) kingdom. There are many new projects about Three Kingdoms were developed these years. Something like Three Kingdom Culture Tour,Three Kingdoms dinner, Three Kingdoms festival are all promoted by local companies like a kind of fast food.

I always think John Woo’s Red Cliff is just an element among these fast-food-culture things. The movie story is dubitable, The actor’s lines is ridiculous, But, Who cares? It’s the story of Three Kingdoms.

Yeah, I love the stories of that period, And I also love all kinds of Three Kingdom games for many years, But I don’t like this topic becomes so commercial.

I hope we can learn more “Tao” from these stories, and remember the importance of faith and righteousness even in this money world.

P.S.: Talk About Three Kingdoms with JH last night :

JH:

even the 3 kingdoms era was chaotic, a lot of valuable lessons to learn : Guan Yu & Zhang Fei loyalty & trust ; Zhuge Liang wisdom…

iWalk:

Many strategies can also be used in business world. :P

iWalk:

also love Cao cao’s poems “Observing The Sea” (观沧海), I can see big thought from his poem. I always act as Cao cao when I play 3 kindoms game. I dislike Liu bei, I think he is a hypocrite.

JH:

ooh …. Cao Cao is a very smart leader, highly educated. Liu Bei is 小人…

JH:

I admire Guan Yu…

iWalk:

Me too,and Zhao Yun. :P

JH:

子龙, Another great character & warrior, highly respected , loyal…
