A Wooden Stool of My Great-grandfather

iWalk 22 October 2008 18 Comments

My uncle always preserves the traditional things of our family very well. I am so glad to see this wooden stool of my great-grandfather in my uncle’s home.
It’s made during Qing Dynasty.

The Wooden Stool of My Great-grandfather, the teapot on the stool belonged to my grandfather.

The note on the back of the wooden stool was written with a brush pen.

The note on the back of the wooden stool tell me, This wooden stool was made in the 22nd year of the Reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1896). The note also tell us whom the wooden stool belonged to, and how much it did cost.

My great-grandfather was not a rich person then, But he worked hard for his business, A company named “Li Shun Nan Hao” which engaged cotton trade. Cotton trade was one of main pocketbooks of then. But from this wooden stool, I could image how hard it is when he began his business.

I don’t know if it’s my great-grandfather’s handwriting, But they said his handwriting was quite well.

It’s certainly not a valuable stool. But it’s a priceless souvenir of our family.

We have the same culture indeed.
The teapot was made in JingDeZhen at least 80 years ago, which was famous for its JingDeZhen China.

That is neat! And of course, while monetary value may not be high, it’s priceless because it’s been in your family so long.

    Thank you jodapoet.
I love to hear the stories of old days. But it seems the children today don’t care the history. I think that’s terrible for a nation.
