I don’t like any kind of hospital. But I strongly suggest you visit (Hospital Sant Pau in short) when you travel to .
It’s the oldest hospital in Spain. And the only hospital in this world which was declared as World Heritage by UNESCO for its singular architectural and artistic beauty.

It’s already dark when I walked out from . I decided to continue walk to where died.

Found In 1401, is a high complexity hospital with more than 600 years history. It was first form by the mergence of six small medieval hospitals of .

In early 19th century, the hospital was unable to meet the demands of the growth of the city. It needed expand badly. A Catalan banker named Pau Gil donated to rebuild it into a hospital based on the “garden city” model for poor people. The architect ,who was referred to as the second most important moderniste architect (after ), was commissioned with the project.

was sent here after being struck by a tram in 1926. Because of his shabby appearance he was thought to be homeless. You can still see the archives recording Gaudí’s admittance in this hospital for poor people.

In 1997, Together with the Palau de la Música Catalana (one of the world’s leading concert halls, another remarkable work by ), was declared World Heritage by UNESCO as such description: “The Hospital de Sant Pau is equally bold in its design and decoration, while at the same time perfectly adapted to the needs of the sick.”

This is a very beautiful building !

It’s great to see buildings of such rich and long history to be further protected by UNESCO. Initially, I thought that was a cathedral, looks like a very beautiful and holy venue.

Think we should all start to compile our own country’s buildings too as it might be lost in history due to economic growth.

An amazing place and a magnificent building, but using it as a hospital must make life very difficult for the people who work there. Presumably there are some modern facilities hidden away somewhere. It’s good to hear it is protected as a World Heritage site.

What a stunning hospital building. I wouldn’t add a hospital to my itinerary normally, but if I ever visit Barcelona, I would definitely try to visit this hospital. :-)
