I just saw the news that Prince Gong’s Mansion will reopen to public at Aug 20, 2008. That’s a good news to whom will visit beijing during olympic times.
Prince Gong’s Mansion(Gong Wang Fu in Chinese) is Beijing’s largest and the best preserved Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) princely mansion. It’s located near Shichahai Lake, to the northwest of the Forbidden City in Beijing. One of my colleagues said it’s a play garden of her when she was a little child.
The mansion was constructed around the year 1777 and was originally the private residence of Heshen, a favorite minister of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In 1851, the mansion was transferred the ownership to Prince Gong by Emperor Xianfeng (1851-1862), hence the name Prince Gong’s Mansion.
Heshen was the bigest grafter of Qing Dynasty, When he was executed by Emperor Jiaqing (1796-1820), his property was assessed at over 800 million ounces of silver. But as the designer of this mansion, Heshen showed his accomplishments at ancient Chinese architecture with deep cultural connotations.
The ‘Western-Style Gate,’ the ‘Grand Theater House’ and the ‘fu’ Stele are referred to as the ‘Three Uniqueness in the Prince Gong’s Mansion’. You’ll see a long line wating for touch the ‘fu’ Stele in a cave anytime. That’s worth, because the Chinese character ‘fu’ carved on the about 8-meter-long stele is a copy of the Emperor Kangxi’s (1622-1723) handwriting.
It’s said Prince Gong’s Mansion is half of Beijing City. It is a place really worthy of a visit.
Yesterday’s news also said, The wall which Hengsheng hide his treasures were found during the maintain began from a year ago. But the treasures storehouse was still a secret.
