I think this is a great feature. I always choose seats closest to the front so I can get out faster after we landed =). Another option is to choose seats at the back, if its an empty flight most people will be seated at the front and you will have more space at the back where you may get an empty row of seats you can lay down on. singapore airlines, im sure along with other airlines, allows you to check in online and choose your own seats.
