The Blue Book of Eze
I am not a idolater, But I am so interesting about why Eze attract so many famous people.
Okay, Here is some story I hear from here and there, Let’s call it the Blue Book Of Eze.
Frederic Nietzsche(Philosopher)
Frederic Nietzsche discovers the Riviera in December 1883. Then he stayed here until the 20th April 1884. Nietzsche achieved his work in Eze during those days.
During his second stay (December 1884 - April 1885), Nietzsche put a final point at Eze. During his following holidays in Nice (October 1886-April 1887 and October 1887-April 1888), the philosopher often came back to take a rest here.
Maurice Blanchot(Philosopher)
Blanchot is one of the most mysterious character of the French philosophers. he owned a house in Eze since the 50’s.This helped his whish to hide from the crowd.
Maurice Blanchot’s house in eze located on Bournou’s Street, in the heart of the medieval village. Eze was the element release for Nietzsche. Nietzsche is in the centre of the work of Blanchot.Maybe Blanchot chosen Eze also want to find the Nietzsche thought and to measure him.
Alfred Hitchcock (Film Director)
The great film director Alfred Hitchcock has shoot a scene of his film “To catch a thief ” in Balsan castle, With Grace Kelly and Gary Grant. It said Grace Kelly meet the Prince of Manaco here, and became the Princess Of Monaco later.
Zlatko Balokovic(Violinist)
World famous Violinist Zatlo Balokovic bought a house in Eze-Village. Renovated and transformed, that dwelling is a Relais & Château renowned, La Chèvre d’Or.
Balokovic and his wife, grand daughter of Adlai Stevenson, vice president of the United-States. shared their time between United States and Eze-Village. During the Second World War, he became involved in many wartime political efforts in relationship with Yugoslavia.
In 1954, Balokovic was decorated by Tito of the Large Cross of the Yugoslav flag. At Vis-à-vis to the Mediterranean, the current site of the bar of La Chèvre d’Or, the musician repeated his concerts.
Samuel Latham Barlow(Composer)
Giant composer Samuel Latham Barlow was one of the first foreigner being decorated with the Legion of Honour for his adaptation of “My friend Pierrot” in The Opera Comic. he was very productive in the thirties and Forties stayed regularly in Eze village during nearly thirty years.
From the thirties, Barlow is divided between his residence of Gramecy park in New York and his house in Eze. His memory and his bonds with Eze are always presents in the memory. Of course some Ezasques, but also of many American tourists anxious to see the places that inspired it.
Francis Blanche(Actor & Singer)
The actor and singer Francis Blanche was only seventeen years old when he starts producing himself in Parisian cabarets. His first song was very successful, and at twenty years old, he wrote lyrics for Charles Trenet and then for Edith Piaf, the Jacques brothers…676 songs in total.
At this time, Blanche brought a house in Eze where he invited others humorists like Jean-Marc Thibault, Dary Cowl … the jokes followed the pranks… In 1956, he received the humour award.
Francis Blanche rested in Eze But He fell asleep in Paris in 1974 at the age of 53. His epitaph was the last verses of his poem: ” Let me sleep, i was made for that…”
Jacques Cousteau(Explorer)
Jacques Balsan was one of the pioneers of aviation with the patent n°22 of plane pilot. In 1921 he’s married with Consuelo Vanderbilt, duchess at the time of a first marriage with the cousin of Churchill, the duke of Marlborough.
In 1921, Jacques Balsan build the Balsan Castle at Eze, In this later famous castle, They welcomed many honoured guests including the duke of Connaught, young son wire of the Victoria Queen, the Maharajah of Kapurthala and Charlie Chaplin.
Francophile, William of Sweden(Prince)
This prince is the younger son of king Gustave v and Victoria of Baden. In 1920, he visited Eze village and then bought a housing estate ” Château Eza ” at 1923. The prince didn’t miss any occasion to express his affection to France and Eze.
Others
Today, we can also see the many Princes and the Princess of Europe live in Eze in full time or for holiday. Walt Disney came here and fell in love with this place and stayed two weeks. The coryphaeus of the group U2, Bono, choose Eze as his home forever.
The top guests of Eze also list: Bill Clinton,Dave Evans,Lenny Kravitz, Tina Turner, Naomi Campbell, Qunicy Jones…and my favorite Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt of course.
